COMPARISON

Tengwar vs Talkpal for Learning Elvish

Both promise AI-powered language learning. One is built for Elvish from the ground up. The other is a general AI that happens to discuss it.

The core difference

Talkpal is a general AI language tutor that supports many languages, including a setting for Elvish. It uses a large language model to chat conversationally. The problem with conlangs: general AI models sometimes invent vocabulary that does not exist in canon (AI hallucination).

Tengwar is purpose-built for fictional languages. Its AI tutor — Mithrandir — only uses words documented in Tolkien's published texts and explicitly cites sources (LotR, Silmarillion, Vinyar Tengwar). It is paired with a structured curriculum of lessons, not just a chat box.

The hallucination problem

When you ask a general AI "how do you say X in Elvish?", it may produce a plausible-sounding word that does not exist in Tolkien's texts. This is harmless for casual chat but bad for tattoos, academic interest, or creative writing where accuracy matters.

Tengwar's Mithrandir is constrained to documented Quenya and Sindarin vocabulary and flags uncertain or reconstructed forms. Every answer includes a source.
