About Tengwar

Tengwar (learningelvish.com) is an independent education project dedicated to making J.R.R. Tolkien's constructed languages — Quenya and Sindarin — and the Tengwar script accessible to learners worldwide.

We combine spaced-repetition vocabulary practice, interactive lessons grounded in Tolkien's published texts, an AI tutor (Mithrandir) that draws on attested forms only, and hand-curated reference material on grammar, mutations, and pronunciation.

We are not affiliated with the Tolkien Estate, HarperCollins, or any rights holder. All Elvish vocabulary referenced is from Tolkien's published works (The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The Letters, the Etymologies, Vinyar Tengwar and Parma Eldalamberon journals). Where attested forms are insufficient, we explicitly mark reconstructions as such.

HOW THE PROJECT IS RUN

Tengwar is bootstrapped by a small team of language enthusiasts. Premium subscriptions (via Creem) fund hosting, AI infrastructure (OpenAI), and ongoing content development. Free tier remains permanently free.

EDITORIAL POLICY

We do not invent Elvish. Every word, declension, and conjugation we teach is either attested in Tolkien's writings or cited as a reconstruction by recognised scholars (David Salo, Helge Fauskanger, the Vinyar Tengwar editorial board). When sources conflict, we present the dominant reading and note the disagreement.
