How Tengwar Writer Works

Tengwar Writer converts any English text — a word, a phrase, a full quote — into Tengwar, Tolkien's Elvish writing system, using the CSUR (Constructed Scripts Unicode Registry) Tengwar mapping. Unlike the Tengwar Name Generator, which is built specifically for single names, this tool is meant for longer text: quotes, mottos, inscriptions.

Tengwar is a featural alphabet — each letterform encodes information about the sound it represents (whether it's voiced, nasal, a stop, and so on) rather than being an arbitrary symbol. Tolkien designed it as a complete, functioning writing system with its own rules for vowel marks (tehtar) and punctuation, documented in the appendices to The Lord of the Rings — it's the same script used for the One Ring's inscription and Gandalf's sword.

This tool transliterates the sounds of your English text into Tengwar letters; it doesn't translate the words into Elvish vocabulary first. For that, use the Elvish Translator, then paste the Quenya or Sindarin result in here to see it written in Tengwar script.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I write a full quote or sentence, not just a name?

Yes — that's specifically what this tool is for, as opposed to the Tengwar Name Generator which is built for shorter single names. Type any English text and it renders letter by letter.

Does this work for languages other than English?

The transliteration rules here are tuned for English phonetics. If you want to render Elvish vocabulary (Quenya/Sindarin) specifically, translate it first with the Elvish Translator, then paste the Elvish result in here.

Can I download or share what I write?

Yes — the output downloads as an image, and Tengwar Scribe (linked below) additionally offers a persistent shareable link if you want a permanent, checkable record.
