Elvish Word for Life — Coivië in Quenya, and Sindarin Words for Living

7 min read1340 wordsBy the Tengwar Editorial Team

Quick Answer: The Elvish word for life is coivië in Quenya. Related words are coirëa (living), vehtë (a span of life) and coimas (life-bread, the Quenya name for lembas). For Sindarin, Tolkien's surviving material gives the verbs cuia- (to live) and cuina- (to be alive) rather than a well-attested noun.

"Life" is one of the most requested Elvish words for tattoos and names, and it is also one where the honest answer is a little uneven. Quenya has a clear noun and a small family around it. Sindarin, the language of most Lord of the Rings names, is thinner: our database has its verbs for living, not a noun for life. This guide sets out what is attested and where. For related vocabulary, see our guides to Elvish words for death and fate and Elvish words for nature.

* The Quenya gloss for coita- ("to live, be alive, have life") is inferred by the Eldamo lexicon, not written by Tolkien. Several verb forms here are also deduced by Eldamo from inflected or compound forms, as the hyphen at the end of each verb shows.

Quenya: Coivië

Pronunciation: KOY-vee-eh, stress on the first syllable. The c is always hard, like k.

Coivië is the plain Quenya noun "life." It is attested in The Nature of Middle-earth, the 2021 volume of Tolkien's late writings on the Elves, their bodies and their lives. That makes it a comparatively recently published word, which is why older Elvish word lists often leave "life" out or offer a fan coinage instead.

Vehtë — a life, a lifetime

Vehtë means "[a span of] life" and also "habitat, haunt" (Parma Eldalamberon 17). Where coivië is life itself, vehtë is closer to a life: the stretch of one creature's existence, or the place where it lives.

Coirëa — living

The adjective coirëa, "living," is attested in The Peoples of Middle-earth. If you want to say "living" about a tree, a light or a person, this is the attested word.

Coimen — life-year

Coimen, "life-year," comes from The Nature of Middle-earth. Tolkien used it when working out how Elves age and how their years compare with those of Men. It is a precise, technical word rather than a poetic one, but it is the closest attested thing to "a year of one's life."

Coimas — the bread of life

Coimas is the Quenya name for lembas, the Elvish waybread, explained as "life-bread." It is discussed in the essay "Of Lembas" in Unfinished Tales. In The Lord of the Rings itself the bread is always called by its Sindarin name, lembas. Our guide to Elvish words for everyday life covers more food words.

Sindarin: Words for Living

Here our vocabulary database is honest about a gap: it holds no attested Sindarin noun for "life." What it does hold are two verbs:

  • cuia- — "to live" (The Lord of the Rings, Letters, Parma Eldalamberon 17). The form is deduced by Eldamo from inflected and compound attestations.
  • cuina- — "to be alive" (The Silmarillion, Letters, Etymologies), likewise deduced from inflected forms.

Sindarin also has gwê, "living creature" (Parma Eldalamberon 17), the counterpart of Quenya vëo.

If you want "life" specifically in Sindarin, you will find words online, but we can't recommend one from our sources. It is better to use Quenya coivië than to put an unverified Sindarin word on your skin.

Living Things

Quenya distinguishes kinds of living beings:

  • vëo — a living creature (Etymologies, PE17).
  • celva — an animal, a "living thing that moves" (The Silmarillion, Nature of Middle-earth, War of the Jewels).
  • ceula — glossed "?alive (of vegetable)" in PE17; the question mark is Tolkien's or the editors' uncertainty, so treat it as tentative.

The contrast between celva (a living thing that moves) and the plant world is the same one Tolkien drew in the old Elvish distinction between beasts and growing things. Our Elvish word for tree guide covers the plant side.

Life and Death

Because life is so often paired with death in memorial designs, it helps to know how the Elves spoke about both. Elves in Tolkien's world are bound to the world and do not die of age as Men do, and their vocabulary reflects that. Our guide to Elvish words for death and fate explains the death side; combining words from the two posts into a sentence would be Neo-Elvish.

Writing Coivië in Tengwar

Coivië has three vowels in a row at the end, so in a Quenya Tengwar mode you will see more vowel marks than consonant letters; the final ë rides on a short carrier. The diaeresis on ë is a spelling hint that the letter is pronounced, not a separate sound.

The simplest way to see it correctly is to type the word into our Tengwar name tool, which renders the spelling for you. Compare coivië and coirëa side by side if you are choosing between "life" and "living."

Tattoo and Naming Notes

  • Use coivië for "life." It is the clearest attested noun.
  • Keep the diaeresis. Coivië with its final ë is the correct spelling; the mark tells readers the final vowel is sounded.
  • Avoid unverified Sindarin. If a design must be Sindarin, a verb like cuina- (to be alive) is attested, but verbs make awkward single-word tattoos.
  • Sentences are Neo. "Life is beautiful," "long life" and similar phrases are not in Tolkien. Build them carefully, label them (Neo), and check them with our translator.
  • For a name, none of these words is a recorded personal name. Using one as a name is a modern choice.
