Elvish Word for Sea — Ëar in Quenya, Gaear in Sindarin
Try It Yourself — Free Elvish Tools
Quick Answer: The Elvish word for sea is Ëar in Quenya and Gaear in Sindarin. Ëar gives the famous name Eärendil, "sea-lover"; Sindarin Gaearon is "the Great Sea." Quenya also has poetic airë (sea) and ëaren (ocean).
The Sea is everywhere in Tolkien: the Elves come from over it, long for it, and finally sail back across it. This guide goes deeper on that one word — its two dialect forms, the ocean and wave words around it, the names that really contain it, how it looks in Tengwar, and what to know before using it for a tattoo or a name. For the wider vocabulary of the natural world, see Elvish words for nature, and for fresh water, the Elvish word for water.

Quenya: Ëar
"Mae govannen" — want to actually speak Elvish?
Try It Free →Pronunciation: EH-ar, two syllables. The two dots (a diaeresis) on ë are not decoration: they tell you the e and a are pronounced separately, not as one sound.
Ëar is the everyday Quenya word for the sea in The Silmarillion. It is the root of some of the most famous names in the legendarium.
Eärendil — sea-lover, not "Star of the Sea"
Eärendil is built from ëar, sea, plus -ndil, "devoted to, lover of." The name means sea-lover. It is often mistranslated online as "Star of the Sea," probably because Eärendil ends up sailing the sky with a Silmaril on his brow and is seen from Middle-earth as a star. The star is part of his story, not part of his name. We list this among the common errors in 10 Elvish words the internet keeps getting wrong.
Frodo's cry in Shelob's lair, Aiya Eärendil Elenion Ancalima!, uses the name — "Hail Eärendil, brightest of stars." It is Frodo who says it, in The Two Towers, Book IV, chapter 9.
Eärenya — the Sea's day
The Lord of the Rings, Appendix D, describes how the Númenóreans added a seventh day to the six-day Elvish week, Eärenya, the day named for the Sea. Its Sindarin form is Oraearon.
Poetic and older words
Quenya keeps two older or poetic words alongside ëar: airë, sea, and airon, ocean. Eldamo marks both as archaic or poetic, so they suit verse better than everyday speech. Ëaren and váya (ocean, sea) round out the set.
Sindarin: Gaear
Pronunciation: GAH-ear, with the ae pronounced like the y in "my" — roughly GAI-ar.
Gaear is the Sindarin sea. Its best-known derivative is Gaearon, "the Great Sea" — Eldamo glosses it "ocean, (lit.) great sea," attested in The Lord of the Rings and The Road Goes Ever On. In The Silmarillion the western ocean between Middle-earth and Aman is also called Belegaer, the Great Sea; we give the English meaning as the text does, without splitting the name further.
The Sindarin word also turns up in the Sea's day of the week, Oraearon (Appendix D).
Waves and havens
- faloth — a large foamy wave (PE17).
- lond — a haven, a land-locked harbour; Quenya londë.
- Edhellond — "Elf-haven," the Elvish harbour in Gondor (Unfinished Tales).
Havens matter in Tolkien because they are where the Elves board the ships that take them over the Sea to the West.
Sea, Water or Lake?
Learners often reach for the wrong word because English "sea," "water" and "lake" overlap. Elvish keeps them apart:
| You mean | Quenya | Sindarin |
|---|---|---|
| the open sea | Ëar | Gaear |
| the great ocean | ëaren | gaearon |
| water | nén | nen |
| a lake | — | nen |
| the shore, surf line | falassë | — |
Sindarin nen is water or a lake, as in Nen Hithoel, "Misty Water," the lake above the Falls of Rauros. It is not the word for the sea. Quenya falassë deserves a note of its own: Eldamo glosses it "(wave-beaten) shore, seashore, line of surf," so it names the place where the sea meets the land rather than the water itself. If you want a word that sounds like breaking waves, falma and falassë are the pair to know.
Sea-longing
You will often see "sea-longing" described as an Elvish word. In The Lord of the Rings it is an English idea: when Legolas hears the gulls at Pelargir, the longing for the Sea wakes in his heart. Be careful with the Quenya word oiolossë: it is sometimes passed off as "sea-longing," but it means ever-snow-white and is a name of the mountain Taniquetil.
Writing Ëar and Gaear in Tengwar
Ëar is short — mostly vowels — so in a tehta mode most of the word is carried by vowel marks rather than full letters, which can look surprising the first time you see it. Gaear has a diphthong that the Sindarin modes write in their own way. Because the conventions differ between modes, the most reliable way to see either word is to run it through our Tengwar name tool. Compare the output with a second source before using it on skin or stone.
Tattoo and Naming Notes
- Keep the diaeresis. Ear without the dots reads as the English body part. Write Ëar.
- Choose a register. Ëar is the plain Quenya sea; airë is poetic; Gaear is Sindarin. Don't combine forms from both languages in one phrase.
- For a name, Eärendil (sea-lover) is the canonical sea-name, and its meaning is lovely on its own. Check the source of any other sea-name you find online before adopting it — many are modern inventions.
- Sentences are not attested. "The sea calls me" and similar lines are Neo-Elvish at best. If you assemble one, label it (Neo). Our translator helps you see which parts are attested.
