Quick Answer: The Elvish word for mountain is oron in Quenya and orod in Sindarin. The Sindarin plural is ered, as in Ered Luin, the Blue Mountains. Orodruin (Mount Doom) means "Mountain of Fire," and Valinor's great peak Taniquetil means "High White Peak."
Mountains are everywhere in Tolkien's maps, so the word for mountain is one of the easiest to find in his names: Orodruin, the Ered Luin, the Ered Nimrais, Caradhras, the Misty Mountains. This guide sets out the core words in both languages, the plural that trips up learners, the names that contain them, and the related words for hill, peak and summit. For the wider landscape, see our guides to Elvish words for nature and Sindarin place names.

Quenya oron and Sindarin orod are cognates — the same old word, shaped differently by each language's sound changes.
Quenya: Oron

Try It Free →Pronunciation: OH-ron, stress on the first syllable, with a lightly tapped r.
Oron is the Quenya mountain, attested in The Silmarillion, with the plural oronti. Quenya also has oro and orto, glossed "mount, mountain, hill" (PE17 and the Etymologies), which appear inside longer names and compounds.
Two more precise words describe the top of a mountain:
- ingor — "summit of a mountain" (The Peoples of Middle-earth).
- orotinga — "mountain-top" (Vinyar Tengwar 47).
Taniquetil and Oiolossë
The greatest mountain in Tolkien's mythology is Taniquetil, the peak of Manwë in Valinor. Our database glosses it "High White Peak" (The Silmarillion, RGEO, PE17).
Its poetic Quenya name is Oiolossë, and this is a word the internet often gets wrong. It does not mean "the Sea-longing." It means "Ever-snow-white" — a name for the mountain's eternal snows. Our list of Elvish words the internet keeps getting wrong covers this and similar mix-ups.
Sindarin: Orod and Ered
Pronunciation: OH-rod; plural EH-red.
Orod is the Sindarin mountain, and its plural ered is the form you see most on maps. Sindarin rarely makes plurals by adding an ending; instead it changes the vowels inside the word. So orod becomes ered, and amon (hill) becomes emyn. Never write "orods" or "orodin."
Names built on orod and ered
- Orodruin — Mount Doom, "Mountain of Fire": orod plus ruin, red flame.
- Ered Luin — the Blue Mountains, with luin, blue.
- Ered Nimrais — the White Mountains of Gondor (LOTR Appendix E).
- orodben — "mountaineer, one living in the mountains" (The War of the Jewels).
Caradhras and the Misty Mountains
Caradhras, the mountain that defeats the Fellowship, is glossed "Red Peak"; the first part is caran, red. Here Gandalf calls Naur an edraith ammen!, "Fire be for saving of us," when the snow closes in — our guide to the Elvish word for fire covers that line.
The range itself is Hithaeglir, the Misty Mountains: hith, mist, plus aeglir, "line of peaks." Aeglir builds on aeg, sharp; the extra sense "point" for aeg is inferred by Eldamo rather than glossed by Tolkien.
Hills, Peaks and Mounds
Not every high place is a mountain, and Elvish keeps the distinctions:
- amon (Sindarin) — hill or mound: Amon Hen, the Hill of Sight, and Amon Sûl, Weathertop, the Hill of Wind. Plural emyn, as in Emyn Muil, the Drear Hills.
- dol (Sindarin) — head, and also hill.
- min (Sindarin) — peak.
- cerin (Sindarin) — a circular mound or artificial hill.
- ambo (Quenya) — hill, rising ground; adjective ambuna, hilly.
- coron (Quenya) — mound.
- pendë (Quenya) and pend (Sindarin) — a steep slope or hillside.
- pind (Sindarin) — crest, ridge.
For a path through mountains, Sindarin imrad means a pass between mountains or through trackless forest. Its literal sense "valley path" is inferred by Eldamo.
Writing Orod and Oron in Tengwar
Both words are short: two consonants with vowel marks. In the usual modes, vowels are written as small marks (tehtar) above the consonants, but Quenya and Sindarin place them differently, so oron and orod do not look like simple copies of each other even though they sound alike.
The quickest way to see either word correctly is to type it into our Tengwar name tool. If you want a full name like Orodruin or Taniquetil, render that too and check it against a second source before using it.
Tattoo and Naming Notes
- Use the bare word or an attested name. Orod, Ered Luin or Taniquetil are all safe.
- Watch the plural. Ered, never "orods."
- Remember the meaning of Oiolossë. It is "Ever-snow-white," not "sea-longing" — a common mistake in tattoo galleries.
- Mount Doom is a dark choice. Orodruin is the mountain where the Ring was forged; pick it knowingly.
- New compounds are Neo. Joining orod to other words to make a new name is possible, but label it (Neo). Our translator shows which parts are attested.
