Elvish Word for Silver and Gold — Celeb, Telpë, Mal and Malta
Try It Yourself — Free Elvish Tools
Quick Answer: The Elvish word for silver is celeb in Sindarin and telpë in Quenya (also tyelpë, telep). Gold the metal is malta in Quenya and mal or malt in Sindarin; golden light is laurë (Q) and glaur (S). Mithril is "true-silver," the name of one special metal.
Silver and gold shine through Tolkien's world in a way few other words do. The first light of Valinor came from two Trees, one silver and one gold. The Elves of Lórien wore silver and lived among golden trees, and the greatest smith of the Second Age carried "silver" in his name. This guide goes deep on these two metal words: every attested form in each dialect, the difference between gold as a metal and gold as a colour, the names built from them, how they look in Tengwar and what to know before you put one on a ring or in a tattoo. For the full colour palette, see Elvish words for colors.

An asterisk marks a gloss that the Eldamo lexicon inferred rather than one Tolkien wrote: glórin "golden" is Eldamo's reading of a form seen inside names. Glóriel is also a form Eldamo reconstructed from compounds. Both are well-founded, but not Tolkien's own definitions.
Silver in Quenya: Telpë
"Mae govannen" — want to actually speak Elvish?
Try It Free →Pronunciation: TEL-peh, stress on the first syllable.
The everyday Quenya word is telpë. Tolkien also wrote tyelpë, which Eldamo marks as the older or more poetic shape, and telep, listed in the Etymologies. All three go back to the same primitive root, given as KYELEP or TYELEP.
Two adjectives grow from it:
- telpina — "like silver, in hue or worth" (The Silmarillion, Etymologies).
- telepta — "silver," used as an adjective (Etymologies, PE17).
Quenya also has a few words for silver light rather than the metal. Nillë means a silver glint, and it is also used for the images of stars Varda set in the sky of Valinor (MR, PE17). Sindë is grey, pale or silvery grey, the colour behind the name of the Sindar, the Grey-elves.
Telperion, the Silver Tree
The most famous silver word in Quenya is a name: Telperion, the elder of the Two Trees of Valinor, whose light was silver. Our vocabulary database ties the name directly to telpë. One of its other Quenya names was Ninquelótë, "white blossom" — and note that this is a name of the Tree, not an epithet for any person, a mistake that often turns up online. For the Trees themselves, see the Elvish word for tree.
Silver in Sindarin: Celeb
Pronunciation: KEH-leb, with a hard c as in cat.
In Sindarin silver is celeb, the regular development of the same KYELEP root. Its adjective is celebrin, "like silver, in hue or worth" (Etymologies, PM). Be careful: celebrin is an adjective. If you want the noun "silver," write celeb.
Celumë is sometimes offered online as Quenya "silver." It is not: celumë means a stream or flow.
Names built on celeb
These names are explained in our vocabulary database or in Tolkien's notes, so they are safe to cite:
- Celeborn — glossed "silver-tall" (celeb + orn, a word for a tall tree). He is Galadriel's husband; for her name, see Galadriel name meaning.
- Celebrimbor — celeb + paur, "fist, hand": the silver-handed smith of Eregion who forged the Three Rings.
- brethil — not a name but a lovely word: the silver birch (The Silmarillion, Etymologies), also seen in the forest of Brethil.
Many other names begin with Celeb-, such as Celebrían, Elrond's wife. The first element is certainly silver; if you want the full meaning of the rest of a name, check a dedicated name source rather than splitting it yourself.
Mithril: True-Silver
Mithril is the Sindarin name of the precious metal found in Moria. Eldamo glosses it "Moria-silver, true-silver" (from The Return of the Shadow). It is the metal of the mail shirt Bilbo gives to Frodo, and the reason the Dwarves delved so deep under the mountains.
Mithril is one metal, not a synonym for silver. If you mean ordinary silver, write celeb or telpë; if you mean the Dwarven treasure, write mithril.
Gold: Two Kinds of Word
Elvish draws a clear line between gold the metal and gold the colour of light. English uses one word for both; Tolkien used two families.
Gold the metal: malta and mal
| Dialect | Word | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Quenya | malta | Etymologies |
| Sindarin | mal, malt | Etymologies, PE17, PE22 |
All of these go back to a root given as SMAL or MBAL. The adjectives are Quenya malina, "yellow, of golden colour" (Letters, Etymologies), and Sindarin mallen, "golden."
The best-known word from this root is mallorn: mal "gold" + orn "tree," the great golden-leaved trees of Lothlórien (LOTR Appendix F). Its Quenya form is malinornë, "golden or yellow tree." The plural of mallorn is mellyrn — a word sometimes confused with mellyn, "friends." Sindarin mallos is a golden flower (LOTR, Letters).
Gold the light: laurë and glaur
| Dialect | Word | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Quenya | laurë | Silmarillion |
| Quenya | laurëa "golden (of hue)" | LOTR, RGEO |
| Quenya | laurië "goldenness, like gold" | PE17 |
| Sindarin | glaur "gold, light or colour" | UT, Etymologies, PE17 |
| Sindarin | glawar "golden light" | Silmarillion |
Our vocabulary database is explicit: laurë is "not metallic gold — the golden radiance of Laurelin." That is why Laurelin, the younger of the Two Trees, takes laurë: her light was gold. Galadriel's lament Namárië opens with leaves falling "like gold" — the word there is the laurë family, describing colour, not coins.
In Sindarin the same line holds: Glorfindel means "golden-haired," built on the golden-light root and fîn, "hair."
One caution: Lórien has nothing to do with laurë. The name comes from the dream and sleep root, not from gold.
Silver or Gold? Which to Use
| You want to say | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| a silver ring | celeb (S), telpë (Q) | the metal itself |
| silvery, like silver | celebrin (S), telpina (Q) | adjective |
| a gold ring | mal or malt (S), malta (Q) | the metal itself |
| golden sunlight, golden hair | glaur (S), laurë (Q) | colour of light |
| the Moria metal | mithril | a name for one metal |
Writing Celeb and Telpë in Tengwar
Celeb, telpë and malta are all short and regular words, so they are good practice in Tengwar. In the usual modes the vowels become tehtar written above the consonants, and the hard c of celeb takes the letter for k, not s. Sindarin and Quenya place the vowel marks differently, so the same word can look slightly different in each mode. Try them in our Tengwar name tool and, if it is going on jewellery, compare with a second source before engraving.
Naming and Tattoo Notes
- Pick the dialect first. Celeb is Sindarin, telpë is Quenya. Don't mix them in one phrase.
- Metal or light? For "golden hair" or "golden light," use the laurë or glaur family; for a gold object, use malta or mal.
- Celebrin is an adjective, and sarna (stony) is too: write the noun celeb if you want "silver" on its own.
- For a name, the attested names are safest: Celeborn, Celebrimbor, Laurelin, Glorfindel. A newly coined "silver" name is Neo-Elvish and should be labelled (Neo).
- Phrases are not attested. "Silver moon" or "heart of gold" are not Tolkien sentences. Our translator shows which parts of a phrase are attested and which are built.
