Galadriel Name Meaning: "Maiden Crowned with a Radiant Garland"

Quick Answer: Galadriel means "maiden crowned with a radiant garland". It is the Sindarin form of the Quenya name Alatáriel (Altariel), which Celeborn gave her for the light of her hair (Unfinished Tales). Her birth names were Artanis, "noble woman", and Nerwen, "man-maiden". The name comes from galad "radiance", not galadh "tree".
Galadriel has more names than any other Elf in The Lord of the Rings, and the most famous of them is also the most misunderstood. Many sites say it means "tree lady" or "lady of the trees". Tolkien says it does not. He also explains why people get it wrong, which is unusual for him.
This post is about the name only: its parts, its Quenya original, her other names, and the "tree" confusion. For what she actually says, including Namárië, see our guide to Galadriel's Elvish quotes.
All of Galadriel's Names
| Name | Language | Meaning | Who gave it | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Artanis | Quenya | noble woman | her father Finarfin | Peoples of Middle-earth; Unfinished Tales |
| Nerwen | Quenya | man-maiden | her mother Eärwen | same |
| Alatáriel / Altariel | Telerin / Quenya | maiden crowned with a radiant garland | Celeborn | Unfinished Tales |
| Galadriel | Sindarin | the same name, in Sindarin form | the name she used in Middle-earth | Unfinished Tales; LotR |
Two kinds of name are at work here. Elves of Valinor received a father-name and a mother-name at birth. Later they could gain an epessë, a name given by someone else for a quality they showed. Galadriel's best-known name is of the second kind.

| Element | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|
| galad | radiance, light, gleam | Sindarin; cf. Gil-galad "star of radiance" |
| -riel | garlanded maiden, a maiden crowned | from a root for a crown or garland |
Galad is the Sindarin word for radiance or brilliant light. It is the same element as in Gil-galad, "star of radiance", the last High King of the Noldor in Middle-earth (The Silmarillion). Our vocabulary database lists it with the note that Galadriel's name comes from this word and not from galadh, "tree".
-riel means a maiden crowned with a garland. Tolkien explains it alongside the Quenya form in Unfinished Tales. Do not read it as the common feminine ending -iel with an extra r. The r belongs to the "garland" element. Many name lists split the name as galad + r + iel, and that split loses the "crown" meaning that Tolkien gives.
The image is of her hair. Tolkien writes that her hair was lit with gold and silver, as if it held the light of the Two Trees. Celeborn named her for that light, and the name means, in effect, "the maiden whose hair is a crown of radiance".
The Quenya Original: Alatáriel
The name was not first made in Sindarin. In Unfinished Tales ("The History of Galadriel and Celeborn") Tolkien gives the original as Alatáriel, a form shaped by Telerin, the language of Celeborn's people in Tolkien's later account. Alatáriel breaks down as:
- alata — radiance
- riel — garlanded maiden
The shorter spelling Altariel is the one in the title of Namárië in The Road Goes Ever On: "Altariello nainië Lóriendessë", "Galadriel's lament in Lórien". So the Quenya form of her name appears in the published poem's own heading.
Galadriel is that name carried over into Sindarin, the everyday language of the Elves of Middle-earth. Elves rarely used Quenya names in Beleriand after Thingol banned the Noldorin tongue, so the Sindarin form is the one the world remembered.
Why "Tree Lady" Is Wrong
This is the confusion people bring up most often. Sindarin has two words that look alike:
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| galad | radiance | Galadriel, Gil-galad |
| galadh | tree | Galadhrim, Caras Galadhon |
They differ by one letter, d against dh (the th sound in "this"). Galadriel ruled Lothlórien, the land of the Galadhrim, the "Tree-people", whose city was Caras Galadhon, "City of the Trees". Readers see the overlap and guess that her name means "tree lady".
Tolkien took this up himself. In Unfinished Tales he notes that the Silvan Elves of Lórien did associate her name with their trees and with galadh, which made the name sound even more fitting to them. He is clear, though, that this was a later association and not the origin. The source is galad, radiance.
So the honest answer has two parts. The name means "maiden crowned with radiance". The "tree" reading is a folk-etymology that Tolkien recorded, and he records it as a mistake made inside the story. You can mention it as part of the name's history, but do not offer it as the translation.
Artanis: "Noble Woman"
Artanis was her father-name, given by Finarfin. Tolkien glosses it "noble woman" in the essay "The Shibboleth of Fëanor", published in The Peoples of Middle-earth. The ar- element is the same "noble" element seen in many Elvish names. Arwen, "noble maiden", is the clearest Sindarin example; see Arwen name meaning.
The exact breakdown of the second half of Artanis is less clear than the gloss. Tolkien's notes relate it to a word for woman, but the details are scattered across late texts. We give the meaning he states and leave the finer analysis to the specialist literature.
Nerwen: "Man-Maiden"
Nerwen was her mother-name, from Eärwen. Tolkien glosses it "man-maiden" and explains why: Galadriel grew to great height and strength, and she matched the Noldorin princes in contests of body as well as mind. Ner- relates to the word for a man in the sense of an adult male, and -wen is the "maiden" element found in Arwen and Eärwen.
It is not an insult or a joke. A mother-name often told a truth about the child, and this one recorded that Galadriel was, from youth, the equal of her brothers.
Names Built From the Same Roots
All of these are attested; none is a modern coinage.
From galad (radiance):
- Gil-galad — "star of radiance", the High King
- Galadriel / Alatáriel — the name itself
From galadh (tree), for contrast:
- Galadhrim — the Tree-people of Lórien
- Caras Galadhon — City of the Trees
- galadhremmen — "tree-meshed" (LotR, in the hymn A Elbereth Gilthoniel)
From the "maiden" element -wen:
- Arwen — noble maiden
- Eärwen — Galadriel's mother
- Nerwen — man-maiden
From the "noble" element ar-:
- Artanis — noble woman
- Arwen — noble maiden

How to Write Galadriel in Tengwar
In a Sindarin tehtar mode, Galadriel is written as a row of consonants (g, l, d, r, l) with the vowels shown as tehtar. The ie sequence is two vowels, not one, so it needs two separate vowel signs, and modes differ on how they place them. If you prefer the Quenya form Altariel, use a Quenya mode, where the tehta goes over the consonant before the vowel.
Because placement differs from mode to mode, check the result before you use it for jewellery or a tattoo. Our Tengwar name generator writes the name for you, and the Tengwar alphabet guide explains each letter.
Pronouncing Galadriel
Under Tolkien's stress rule (LotR, Appendix E), Galadriel takes the stress on -lad-: ga-LAD-ri-el. The next-to-last syllable ri is short, so the stress moves back one syllable to lad. The final -iel is two syllables, i-el, not a single "eel".
