Arwen Name Meaning: "Noble Maiden" and the Evenstar Undómiel

8 min read1594 wordsBy the Tengwar Editorial Team

Quick Answer: Arwen means "noble maiden" in Sindarin: ar- ("noble, royal") + -wen ("maiden"). Her Quenya title Undómiel means "Evenstar", from undómë "evening twilight" + el "star". The Lord of the Rings says the likeness of her ancestor Lúthien Tinúviel ("daughter of twilight") had come again in her.

Arwen has two names that readers ask about. The first, Arwen, is short and Sindarin. The second, Undómiel, is long, Quenya, and very often split the wrong way. This post covers both, plus the comparison with Lúthien that Tolkien himself makes.

For the lines Arwen speaks in the books and the films, see Arwen's Elvish quotes translated. This page is about the names only.

Ar- is an element that marks nobility. It is not a separate word you can use alone in Sindarin. It shows up as the start of many names of high rank. Galadriel's father-name Artanis, "noble woman", is a close parallel; see Galadriel name meaning.

-wen means "maiden". It is one of the most common endings in women's names in Tolkien. Eärwen was Galadriel's mother, Morwen the mother of Túrin, and Nerwen one of Galadriel's own names. The ending is not a general "female" suffix like -iel. It means a maiden, a young woman.

So Arwen is "noble maiden". Our vocabulary database adds a warning worth repeating: it is a proper name. An older lesson once listed "Arwen" as a Quenya word for "lady", and that was wrong. If you want an Elvish word for lady, use a real word, not her name.

The meaning is straightforward. You may see claims that the name hides a further meaning, such as "noble light". Those are not supported by anything Tolkien published, so we do not repeat them.

Undómiel: How the Name Really Splits

This is where most explanations go wrong. People see Undómiel and split it as undó + miel, then search for a word miel. There is no such element.

undómëevening twilightQuenya; the time after sunset
elstarQuenya elen, short form el
Undómielevening-twilight star, Evenstarthe final -ë of undómë is lost in the compound

The correct analysis is undómë "evening twilight" plus el "star". The m belongs to undómë, not to the second half. Elen, "star", is the same word you see in the greeting Elen síla lúmenn' omentielvo. In Undómiel it appears in its short form.

The English rendering in the books is "Evenstar". That is not a loose poetic version. It is a close translation: the star of the evening twilight.

Why Arwen Is Called the Evenstar

The Lord of the Rings explains the title twice. In Book II, at Rivendell, Frodo sees Arwen at Elrond's table and the text names her Undómiel, the Evenstar of her people. In Appendix A, "The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen", the title is tied to her place in history: she came in the twilight of the Elves, near the end of their days in Middle-earth.

The image works on two levels. The evening star is the first bright light after the sun goes down, and it is also a sign that the day is ending. Arwen is the last great beauty of the Eldar in Middle-earth, and her choice to marry Aragorn and become mortal comes as the Elves are leaving. The title holds both her brightness and the sense of an ending.

The pendant called "the Evenstar" in the Peter Jackson films is a film addition. In the book, Arwen gives Frodo a white gem on a silver chain, and she gives him her place on the ship to the West. The film jewel takes its name from her title, not the other way round.

The Lúthien Tinúviel Comparison

Tolkien links Arwen to Lúthien on purpose. Lúthien was the Elf-maiden who married the mortal Beren in the First Age and gave up her immortality for him (The Silmarillion, "Of Beren and Lúthien"). Arwen, her descendant through Elrond, makes the same choice for Aragorn. The book says the likeness of Lúthien had come again in her.

The names point the same way.

Both of Arwen's famous parallels use twilight. Tinúviel is a poetic name for the nightingale, the bird that sings at dusk, and literally means "daughter of twilight". Beren gave it to Lúthien when he found her dancing in the woods. Undómiel is the star that shines at dusk. Tolkien does not say he built Arwen's title to echo Lúthien's, so we only note the shared image, not a shared root. The two names are formed from different words.

On Weathertop Aragorn sings part of the tale of Beren and Lúthien. That scene prepares the reader for his own story with Arwen, long before the Appendix tells it.

Names Built From the Same Roots

All attested in Tolkien's published works.

With -wen (maiden):

  • Eärwen — "sea-maiden", Galadriel's mother
  • Morwen — mother of Túrin
  • Nerwen — "man-maiden", a name of Galadriel

With ar- (noble):

  • Artanis — "noble woman", Galadriel's father-name

With el / elen (star):

  • Elen — star (Quenya)
  • Gil-galad — "star of radiance" (Sindarin gil, star)

With twilight words:

  • undómë — evening twilight (Quenya)
  • Tinúviel — daughter of twilight, nightingale

Common Mistakes With Arwen's Names

  • "Undómiel contains miel." It does not. The split is undómë + el.
  • "Arwen is the Elvish word for lady." It is a name. Do not use it as a common noun.
  • "Evenstar is only a film title." It is in the book. The films only added the pendant of that name.
  • "Arwen means 'noble light'." No Tolkien text gives this. The stated meaning is "noble maiden".
  • "Arwen is Quenya." Arwen is Sindarin. Only her title Undómiel is Quenya.

If you use either name for a character or a gift, these five points keep the meaning accurate.

How to Write Arwen in Tengwar

Arwen is easy to write. In a Sindarin tehtar mode you need three consonant letters for r, w and n, with the vowels a and e written as tehtar. Some modes also have a special letter for initial vowels when there is no consonant to carry the sign. Undómiel is a Quenya name, so it is better written in a Quenya mode, where the long ó is marked by a doubled or extended tehta.

Modes vary in small ways, so preview before you engrave anything. Our Tengwar name generator writes Arwen or Undómiel for you, and the Tengwar alphabet guide explains the letters and tehtar.

Pronouncing Arwen and Undómiel

Arwen is said AR-wen. The stress is on the first syllable, the r is tapped or trilled, and the e is short, as in "wet".

Undómiel is un-DÓ-mi-el, four syllables. Under Tolkien's stress rule (LotR, Appendix E), the long vowel ó is marked with an accent, and that long syllable takes the stress. The ending -iel is two syllables, i-el.
