Elvish Word for Brother and Sister — Háno, Muindor, Nésa and Muinthel

6 min read1175 wordsBy the Tengwar Editorial Team

Quick Answer: The Elvish word for brother is háno in Quenya and muindor or hanar in Sindarin. Sister is nésa or onórë in Quenya and muinthel or nethel in Sindarin. The familiar "little brother, little sister" forms are hanno and nettë (Quenya), honeg and neth (Sindarin).

Our Elvish family vocabulary guide gives the whole household at a glance. This page zooms in on siblings, because Tolkien left more words for brother and sister than most lists show: two or three formal words per dialect, pet forms for little siblings, and Quenya compounds for a friend who is "like a brother." For parents, see the companion guide to the Elvish word for mother and father.

Melotorno and meletheldë are forms the Eldamo lexicon deduced from compounds in Tolkien's late notes, rather than words he wrote out on their own. Treat them as well-founded reconstructions.

Brother in Quenya: Háno and Hanno

"Mae govannen" — want to actually speak Elvish?

Pronunciation: HAH-no; HAN-no, with the n held.

Háno is the Quenya brother. Its familiar partner hanno, glossed "brother (diminutive)" by Eldamo (VT47, VT48), is the word a younger sibling might use at home — the equivalent of "bro."

Brother in Sindarin: Muindor, Hanar and Hawn

Pronunciation: MWIN-dor; HAH-nar; HOWN.

Sindarin has two current words. Muindor comes from Tolkien's notes published in Parma Eldalamberon 17 and pairs neatly with muinthel, sister. Hanar comes from later notes in Vinyar Tengwar 47 and 48 and matches the Quenya háno. Hawn is the same word in an older, poetic shape. The diminutive is honeg, "little brother."

Which should you use? Either muindor or hanar is defensible. Muindor is the form most readers will recognise; hanar sits in the same late word family as the Quenya.

Sister in Quenya: Nésa and Onórë

Pronunciation: NEH-sa; o-NOH-reh.

Quenya has two sister words, and both are attested: nésa (VT47) and onórë (Etymologies). The diminutive nettë has a lovely range in Eldamo: "(little) girl, sister (diminutive), daughter, pretty little thing" (VT47, VT48).

A common mistake: seron is not "sister." It means lover or friend, from the root SER.

Sister in Sindarin: Muinthel and Nethel

Pronunciation: MWIN-thel; NEH-thel.

Muinthel (PE17) is the partner of muindor, and nethel (VT47, VT48) is the partner of hanar. The diminutive neth means "little girl" or "little sister."

Siblings and Twins

Sindarin gwanur is a general word: "kinsman, sibling." It is often posted online as "twins," but that is a different word: a pair of twins is gwanûn, from the root WO (Etymologies). Elrond's sons Elladan and Elrohir are the best-known twins in the legendarium, but their names do not contain this word.

Love-brother and love-sister

Tolkien's late notes on Quenya give compounds for a person you love as a sibling: melotorno, "love-brother," and meletheldë, "love-sister" (NM). They are the closest attested words to "sworn brother" or "sister of the heart." Other lists offer gwador and gwathel for sworn siblings; those forms are not in our verified vocabulary, so we don't recommend them for a tattoo without checking a primary source.

For the friendship words themselves, see the Elvish word for friend.

Brothers and Sisters in Tolkien's Stories

Sibling bonds drive some of the biggest turns in The Silmarillion. Fëanor's quarrel with his half-brother Fingolfin splits the Noldor before they ever leave Valinor. The seven sons of Fëanor swear their father's oath together and are bound by it to the end. Galadriel is the sister of Finrod Felagund, the king of Nargothrond, and Elrond and his brother Elros choose different fates: Elrond the life of the Elves, Elros the life of Men as the first king of Númenor. For the royal side of that story, see the Elvish word for king.

Tolkien rarely puts the sibling words themselves into these narratives; the words above come mostly from his linguistic notes. That is why they are best used on their own, as single words, rather than as quotations.

Tengwar, Names and Tattoos

All these words are short and regular, which makes them good Tengwar practice; try them in our Tengwar name tool and compare with a second source before you engrave anything.

  • One dialect per piece. Háno is Quenya, muindor is Sindarin.
  • Matching sibling tattoos work well as pairs that belong together: muindor and muinthel, or hanar and nethel, or háno and nésa.
  • Avoid seron and gwanur for "sister" and "twins": both mean something else.
