Elrond Name Meaning: "Star-Dome", the Vault of Stars
Try It Yourself — Free Elvish Tools
Quick Answer: Elrond means "star-dome", often put as "vault of stars". It is Sindarin: el ("star") + rond ("vaulted roof", and by extension the heavens). The Silmarillion glosses the name as "Star-dome". His twin brother Elros is "star-foam", and both are called Peredhel, "Half-elven".
Elrond is the Lord of Rivendell, host of the Council that sends the Ring south, father of Arwen and foster-father of Aragorn. His name is one of the clearest in Tolkien, because Tolkien glossed it himself and both of its parts appear in other names.
This post covers only the name. For the Elvish lines Elrond speaks and the way the language is used in his house, see Elrond's Elvish: The Language of the Lord of Rivendell.

Word by Word: El + Rond

Try It Free →El: "star"
El is the oldest Elvish word for star. In Quenya the full noun is elen (as in Elen síla lúmenn' omentielvo, "a star shines on the hour of our meeting"), and in Sindarin the noun is êl. As the first part of a compound it usually appears as plain el-.
The same element runs through a family of names. Elendil is "Elf-friend" or "Star-lover" depending on how the first part is read; Elbereth is "Star-queen", the Sindarin title of Varda; Elros, his twin, we come to below. Our vocabulary data notes the element in Elendil, Elrond and Elbereth. Sindarin also has a second star word, gil, found in Gil-galad, "Star of Radiance", the High King whose herald Elrond was.
Rond: "vaulted roof"
Rond is the less familiar half. The appendix to The Silmarillion explains it as a vaulted or arched roof, or a hall that has one. Later notes add the sense of a vaulted chamber or cavern, and of the heavens imagined as a roof over the world.
You can see the hall sense in Nargothrond, the great underground fortress of Finrod on the river Narog: Narog + ost ("fortress") + rond ("vaulted hall"). Our data also lists othrond, "underground stronghold", from the same pair of elements.
Put together, el + rond means a dome or vault of stars. Picture the night sky as a roof set with stars, and you have the image. "Star-dome" is Tolkien's own short gloss; "vault of stars" says the same thing in plainer English.
Do not confuse rond with grond. Grond is a separate Sindarin word meaning "weighty, ponderous", and it is the name of Morgoth's mace and of the battering ram at Minas Tirith. Only the spelling looks alike.
Elros: The Twin Name
Elrond had a twin brother, Elros. Their parents were Eärendil the mariner and Elwing, and Tolkien gave the boys names that match. Both begin with el, "star". Elrond is the star-dome; Elros is el + ros, "star-foam", with ros glossed in The Silmarillion's appendix as "foam, spray".
The pairing fits their family. Their father sailed the sea and in the end carried a Silmaril across the sky as a star. One son's name looks up to the heavens, the other's down to the spray of the sea. Tolkien does not spell out this reading, so take it as an observation, not a rule.
The twins parted at the end of the First Age. Elros chose to be counted among Men and became Tar-Minyatur, first King of Númenor. Aragorn descends from him, which is why the Kings of Gondor and Elrond's line are kin across many thousands of years.
Peredhel: "Half-elven"
Both brothers carry the title Peredhel, "Half-elven" (plural Peredhil). Their ancestry mixes the Eldar, the Edain, and through Lúthien even the Maiar. Tolkien's story gave the Half-elven a choice: to be counted Elf or Man. Elrond chose the Elves, and so did his father.
The word itself is built from edhel, the Sindarin for "Elf", with a prefix meaning "half". Our vocabulary data gives edhel (plural edhil) and edhellen, "elvish", from the same base. Peredhel is a title, not a personal name. In English the books simply call him "Elrond Half-elven".
His children follow the patronymic pattern of Sindarin. A son of Elrond is Elrondion; the twin sons Elladan and Elrohir together are the Elrondionnath, a form recorded in our data under ion, "son".
Rivendell and Imladris
Elrond's house is Rivendell, in Sindarin Imladris. The name breaks down as imlad, "deep valley, dale", plus ris, a cleft or ravine: "Deep Dale of the Cleft". Rivendell is Tolkien's English translation, built from old English words for a cleft dale.
The place name and the personal name are not related. One describes a valley, the other the sky. Readers sometimes assume rond has to do with Rivendell because Elrond rules there, but the two names share no roots. For the Elvish heard in his house, see our Rivendell Elvish guide.

How to Write Elrond in Tengwar
Elrond is Sindarin, so it is usually written in a Sindarin Tengwar mode. In those modes the vowels sit as tehtar (small marks) over consonants, and many Sindarin modes place the vowel over the consonant that follows it. The name has four consonant sounds, l, r, n, d, with the vowels e and o. The nd cluster is a common pairing and some modes have a dedicated letter for it. The initial e has no consonant in front of it, so it needs a carrier or a full vowel letter, depending on the mode.
Modes differ in these details. The quickest way to see a clean version is to type the name into our Tengwar name generator. For each letter and mark, our Tengwar alphabet guide has the full table.
Pronouncing Elrond
Tolkien's stress rule (LotR, Appendix E) puts the accent on the first syllable of a two-syllable word: EL-rond. The r is a light trill or tap, never the soft American r. The o is short, as in "lot".
Common Mistakes
- "Elrond means Elf-lord." It does not. The el- is "star", not a form of edhel, "Elf".
- Linking rond to grond. They are different words with different meanings.
- Reading Elrond as a Quenya name. It is Sindarin. Its Quenya parts would look different.
- Treating "Peredhel" as his surname. It is a title, "Half-elven", shared with his brother and father.
- Stressing the second syllable. The book rule gives EL-rond.
